Box Score The homestanding Diplomats built a 3-0 edge with single goals in each of the first three quarters while outshooting Bryn Mawr 21-0 before the Owls mounted their furious rally. Franklin and Marshall improves to 11-4, 7-1 in Centennial Conference play. Bryn Mawr drops to 12-3 overall, 6-2 in Conference.
Grace Fass opened the scoring for the Diplomats, finishing off a counterattack late in the first period for the 1-0 edge.
Franklin and Marshall pressed their advantage in the second, outshooting Bryn Mawr 12-0 in the period and doubling their advantage in the waning minutes of the half on their last of six penalty corners in frame.
Halftime did little to stem the momentum, as it took less than two minutes into the third for the Diplomats to extend their lead, again on a penalty corner.
But the Owls proved resilient and came out on the front foot in the fourth quarter, finally breaking through in the 48th minute. Maggie Barilla collected a loose ball at the defensive 25 and found Thekla Jubinville on the right sideline. Jubinville played early up the right sideline to Sarah Chapman around midfield, who connected with Hazel Miller leading towards the attacking right corner.
On her third touch, Miller connected with Kate Ervin, sprinting forward out of the midfield, in front of the Franklin and Marshall goal, and the sophomore slotted home for her seventh goal of the season.
Though Bryn Mawr played on the front foot after the goal, the Diplomats held the two goal advantage until the final minute of play when Jubinville took a quick restart in the attacking 25 and dribbled five yards towards the top of the circle before bobbling a backhand pass into the circle. Sophie Vagts was camped out in front of goal, front cut her defender, and half-volleyed the ball past the right hand of goalkeeper Sydney Lippe to pull the Owls within one.
With 28 seconds to play, Bryn Mawr pulled goalkeeper Maggie Titus, who made 10 saves on 13 shots on goal to keep the Owls within striking distance. On the push-back, Bryn Mawr pressed high and won possession as the clock ticked down. A Diplomat foul gave the Owls possession inside the attacking 25 with under 7 seconds to play, but Bryn Mawr was not given a penalty corner and time expired.
Saturday marked the first time Bryn Mawr has scored against Franklin and Marshall since 2006. The Owls return to play on Wednesday at Swarthmore.
