Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – After back-to-back games at home earlier this week, the Bryn Mawr basketball team took to the road to close out their busy week Saturday afternoon, taking on the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. Despite Sydney Collins putting on a dominant show, leading the Owls with 13 points, a quick and early offensive attack from the Blue Jays showed no signs of giving up as Bryn Mawr was unable to find an answer and fell 29-91. Alongside Collins, Jessica Smith tallied nine points of her own for the Owls. For the Blue Jays, Greta Miller and Diarra Oden led with 14 points each, going 6-12 and 6-9 on field goals.
Johns Hopkins got off to a hot start, going on a nine-point run that killed nearly five minutes off the clock to put the score at 2-11. A jump shot from Aliya Stubenbord brought the run to an end, but quickly the Blue Jays rallied to keep control of the first quarter as Oden sunk a three-pointer, followed by Miller with a jump shot of her own. While first-year Jessica Smith looked to get momentum going for the Owls with her first points of the game to put the score at 6-18, the Hopkins duo of Miller and Natalie Mann looked unstoppable as they combined for nine more points to end the first quarter with a 21-point advantage at 6-27.
The second quarter saw a familiar start as the Blue Jays further extended their lead with another huge run, this time of 10 points, to put the scoreboard at 6-37. However, the Owls began to fight back as the team would now go on a seven-point run of their own with Collins spearheading the attack with a jumper, followed by Smith nabbing five points of her own. While the Blue Jays landed a layup that ended the Owls' run, Hannah Binder quickly responded with her first points of the game, causing Johns Hopkins to take a timeout. With about three and a half minutes of gameplay left before the half, Bryn Mawr looked to find another run of their own to overcome the scoring deficit, but it was the Blue Jays who found their footing once again, going on a six-point run to close the second quarter as the Owls trailed 17-45.
After the half, the third quarter saw a commanding performance from Collins as she claimed seven of the Owls' nine points. While Johns Hopkins landed the first four points of the quarter, Bryn Mawr responded with back-to-back layups from Collins and Hallie Kern. The Blue Jays looked to get something going, but with the Owls there with the defensive attack and Collins leading on offense, Bryn Mawr tried their hardest to hold Johns Hopkins as the score sat at 26-69 with ten minutes left of play. The Blue Jays went on a ten-point run to kick off the fourth quarter before Sonja Meijer put a halt to it with a free throw, her first point of the game. While Collins made a layup later on, these were the only points the Owls saw in the quarter as the Blue Jays continued to control the clock and game, asserting their dominance as the final score sat at 29-91.
Bryn Mawr continues on the road this coming Wednesday, December 8th as they take on another Centennial Conference foe, Haverford, to close out away competition for 2021. Gametime is slated for 6:00 PM.
