Owls Balanced Attack Comes Up Short Against Washington College

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls basketball team kicked off a busy week of action earlier Tuesday evening with their first contest following the Thanksgiving break. Bryn Mawr welcomed Washington College to town for another key Centennial Conference matchup in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium, with the Owls looking to pick up their first league win of the season. However, Washington College had different ideas, running out to a big lead in the opening quarter en route to a 64-29 victory on the night. Andrea Prestianne led all scorers with 18 points for the Shorewomen. Jessica Smith notched 10 points and Sydney Collins added another eight to lead the Owls.

The Shorewomen won the opening tip and immediately got on the scoreboard thanks to a layup from Lizzie Hudock, and that would spark a 14-0 run to start the contest for the visitors. Jessica Smith finally got the hosts on the board via a jumper with 3:06 left to go in the quarter. However, Prestianne drilled a three-pointer on the other end in response and then made a layup later in the quarter, giving the Shorewomen a 19-2 advantage by the end of the period.

After the tough start, the Owls were able to make much better headway in the middle of the contest. Aliya Stubenbord poured in a three-pointer to open the second quarter for the Owls, and then Ella Kotsen earned a trip to the free throw line for two more points for the hosts. Smith knocked down another jumper midway through the half to trim Washington College's lead to 12. The Shorewomen closed out the frame on a 9-1 run to take a 30-10 lead at the half, but Bryn Mawr came out of the break and put together another strong third quarter as well. Collins got on the scoreboard a few minutes into the quarter with a jumper on a nice assist from Sonja Meijer after a steal by Smith. A little later, Smith and Boxill hit back-to-back jumpers to get the deficit back near 20. Smith split a pair of free throws a minute later, and then she nailed a three-pointer on the next possession to get Bryn Mawr to 20 points. Collins then hit one more jumper to close out the frame. Thanks to the scrappy efforts and some strong defense, the Owls had only allowed Washington College to increase their lead by five over the second and third quarters.

However, Washington College would pull away once again in the fourth quarter. Prestianne would score seven points alone for the Shorewomen in the frame, starting with a pair of free throws to start off the frame. Collins answered with a layup for the Owls, but Washington College followed with five more points, including a smooth three-ball from Prestianne. Later in the frame, Collins hit another jumper, and then Stubenbord banked in another three-pointer. Unfortunately, those would be the final points of the game for the Owls, and the Shorewomen closed out the game on a 9-0 run to claim the 64-29 victory.

Bryn Mawr will have to shake off the tough result from tonight quickly, as they will be right back in action on Thursday evening at home. The Owls will welcome Franklin & Marshall to campus for another important Centennial Conference contest, with gametime on December 2 set for 7:00 PM.
