Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr basketball team once again gave a Centennial Conference foe a scare in Wednesday night's showdown with Washington College. The Owls proved too hot to handle throughout the first half of tonight's contest, as they matched the Shorewomen shot-for-shot for nearly the entire first half. However, similar to Bryn Mawr's recent result at Swarthmore, the Owls were unable to weather the visitors' attack in the second half, and ultimately the Shorewomen were able to come away with a 77-45 victory on the night. The Owls were led by strong performances from Halena Martin and Sydney Garner, both of whom tallied double-digit points in the contest. Washington College was led by an 18 point, 10 rebound double-double by Emily Thiemann, with Caitlyn Clark providing a stat-stuffing night of her own with 15 points, eight rebounds, and a combined four steals and three assists.
The visitors got on top with a jumper off the opening tip, but Bryn Mawr knotted things right back up thanks to a jumper from Laya Paladugu. After another basket from Washington College, Sydney Garner earned a trip to the line and split a pair of free throws to keep things close early. Back-to-back baskets from Clark and Bridget McLaughlin gave the Shorewomen a five-point advantage, but Elizabeth Chan put a halt to that with a jumper of her own. Later, Lipi Paladugu hit a layup on a nice drive to the hoop, and she followed that up on an ensuing possession with a strong offensive rebound and kick to Martin, who knocked down a jumper to bring the Owls within one at 9-10. The visitors put together another mini-run to get back up by five, but a solid 90 seconds of play helped the Owls tie things right back up. Cleo Elizabeth-Robertson got things started by splitting a pair of free throws. After a missed jumper from the Shorewomen, Martin pulled down a defensive rebound and later earned a trip to the line of her own, where she promptly sank the pair. The Owls continued to play hard on the defensive side - they outrebounded the Shorewomen 10-7 in the quarter - and after several stops, they earned yet another trip to the line. This time, it was Laya Paladugu who canned two more free throws, leveling the game at 14-all. Washington College did end the quarter with a great play, as they drove the length of the floor in seconds to get a basket at the buzzer and take a slim lead to the break.
The second frame started in a similar fashion to the first, as both sides got baskets in the opening minute. Then, after a pair of stops, Bryn Mawr tied the game back up once again on a smooth jumper from Elizabeth-Robertson. After the visitors went back up on two free throws from Clark, Elizabeth-Robertson once again tied things up, this time with a baseline jumper on the right side. The two teams continued to trade baskets over the next several minutes, with a layup from Sydney Garner getting the Owls within two at 25-27. However, the Shorewomen went on a 7-0 run to close out the final 2:32 of the half, and even though the contest still felt very close, the visitors actually took a nine point lead to the locker room at the half.
The Owls got the comeback effort off to a great start to open the second half, as Garner hit another layup and then Elizabeth-Robertson knocked down two free throws. Later, after the teams traded several more baskets, Halena Martin took another nice pass from Lipi Paladugu and drained a deep three to get Bryn Mawr back within eight. Unfortunately, the Shorewomen went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, and that ultimately seemed to deflate any winning chances for the Owls. Martin and Elizabeth-Robertson each hit jumpers before the quarter ended, but the visitors had built a 55-38 advantage by the start of the fourth period. That lead only grew in the final quarter, as the Shorewomen outscored the Owls 22-7 in the frame, mainly due to some strong play from their deep bench. When the final horn sounded, the visitors ultimately came away with a 77-45 win on the night.
Bryn Mawr will now look forward to their final contest of the season on Saturday, when they will host Gettysburg College. The Owls will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, with Elizabeth Chan and Cleo Elizabeth-Robertson set to play in their final game at Bryn Mawr. Tipoff against the Bullets is slated for 2:00 PM in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.
