Prior to her time at Bryn Mawr, Bower established herself as one of the sport’s most accomplished figures. She earned a gold medal in the Women’s 8+ at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and collected multiple World Championship medals throughout her international career. She later transitioned to coaching, guiding World Championship teams and leading the Women’s 4+ at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.
At Bryn Mawr, Bower served as the program’s inaugural head coach and helped build the foundation for its long-term success. Over 20 years, she built a culture rooted in dedication, resilience, and academic excellence, mentoring generations of scholar-athletes while elevating the Owls into a competitive force in Division III. Her leadership extended beyond campus as she also served as MARC Commissioner, helping to grow and strengthen the conference. In recognition of her lasting influence, the women’s points trophy at the MARC Championships is named in her honor as the “Carol Bower Cup.”
The christening of the Vespoli 8+ in her honor stands as a lasting tribute to her vision and leadership—one that will carry forward with every race the Owls row.
