Jasmine Peterson ’26: A Competitive Mindset, A Calling to Help Others

By: Maggie Balderstone

For Jasmine Peterson '26, Bryn Mawr College has been a place of growth, in academics, athletics, and within her own personal development.

A psychology major with a biology minor and a member of the field hockey program, Peterson's time at Bryn Mawr has helped shape both her future career goals and the values she will
carry well beyond graduation.

Peterson arrived at Bryn Mawr knowing she wanted to pursue a STEM-related path but was unsure of exactly where that interest would lead. After exploring different disciplines, she found her footing in psychology, paired with a biology minor that allowed her to continue studying
topics she genuinely enjoyed.

"I've always been really interested in psychology," Peterson said. "I knew I     wanted to do counseling after college, and psychology felt like the right      route. I also just really like biology — plants, animals, all of it — so it fit well      with what I enjoy."

That clarity carried Peterson toward a clear post-graduate plan. Following her graduation in May, she will attend Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, where she will pursue a degree in the Marriage and Family Counseling graduate program. In addition to continuing her academic journey, Peterson will also return to the field hockey pitch for one final season.

"I wanted to be closer to home, and this program felt like the right fit for me," she said. "I'm really excited about the opportunity."

Peterson credits her experience as a Bryn Mawr student-athlete with preparing her for the demands of graduate school and beyond. The structure of balancing practices, games, academics, and campus involvement instilled habits that she knows will be essential moving forward.

"Planning ahead and getting things done early is something I'll definitely take with me," Peterson said. "Being a student-athlete teaches you how to manage your time and avoid letting things pile up."

That sense of discipline was reinforced through Bryn Mawr's field hockey program, where Peterson developed a strong sense of competitiveness and pride. She hopes to bring that same mentality to Plymouth State.

"We're very competitive here, and there's so much pride in our athletic program," she said. "That's something I want to carry with me."

One of the most influential figures in Peterson's athletic journey has been assistant coach Lauren Fuchs, whose high expectations pushed Peterson beyond her comfort zone.

"She was really demanding of me, which was hard at first," Peterson reflected. "But I realized she saw my potential and wanted me to be the best player I could be. That really helped me grow into a more confident, disciplined, and resilient player."

Beyond her role as a student-athlete, Peterson has been actively involved across multiple areas of the Bryn Mawr athletics department. She serves as the Social Media Coordinator for the Bryn Mawr Athletic Alliance, works game-day events, and contributes to the athletic communications office, gaining hands-on experience and staying closely connected to the department beyond on-field competition.

While Peterson originally entered college with aspirations of becoming a dermatologist, her time at Bryn Mawr helped her realize a different calling.

"I realized I really want to help people," she said. "This path     lets me connect with people on a more personal level, and     I'm really excited about that."

As she reflects on her Bryn Mawr experience, Peterson encourages incoming     student- athletes to stay present and embrace every opportunity.

"It goes by much faster than you expect," she said. "Lean on your teammates, take advantage of what Bryn Mawr offers, and embrace the challenges."

Looking back, Peterson is grateful for the people and experiences that defined her time on campus.

"I've met so many supportive and inspiring people who played a significant role in my growth, both on and off the field," she said. "The friendships I've built through Bryn Mawr field hockey will stay with me for a lifetime, and I'll always value the experiences that shaped my journey here."
