Badminton Hosts A Successful Main Line Doubles Tournament

Catherine Fu led the Owls with three wins throughout the tournament.

BRYN MAWR – Pa. – The Bryn Mawr badminton team hosted the Main Line Double tournament on Saturday, welcoming a host of players traveling from Philadelphia, Maryland, Delaware and even Boston. On the day, the Tri-College of Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Swarthmore competed as one team. Among the Tri-College players Harry Yeung and Kevin Meng of Swarthmore won second place in men's doubles. Yeung paired with fellow Garnet Nayla Punjabi in mixed doubles Level C to win first place. The Owls won nine overall matches throughout the day. Catherine Fu led Bryn Mawr with three wins, two of which were in women's doubles with fellow Owl Jacqueline Li.

In the late morning, the Owls won their first match of the day at mixed doubles. Competing were Owls Catherine Fu with partner Reishiro Kawakami who won their match in two sets (21-8, 21-9). Clementine Bloom and partner Ifekhar Ansari also won their mixed doubles match against fellow Owl Jacqueline Lui and her partner Gary Chen (21-12, 21-12).

Catherine Fu and Jacqueline Lui won two women's doubles matches in the afternoon. They would first compete against fellow Owls Amelia Yuan and Cordelia Li (21-17, 21-16). Next up was another Bryn Mawr match with Fu and Lui competing against Lavender Jin and Clementine Chen (21-12, 21-11).

Sarah Gao also had a strong performance at women's doubles with her partner Sherry Sun of Haverford. The Bi-College team first competed against Allison Chong and Yana Outkin (21-10, 21-14). They would go on to win their second match against fellow Owl Elise Phung and her partner from Swarthmore Jing Jing Gopinath (21 -15, 21-11).

Throughout the tournament, three other groups of Owls also claimed wins at women's doubles. First were Amelia Yuan and Cordelia Li who won in two sets against fellow Owls Lavender Jin and Clementine Chen (21-16, 21-14). Christine Wang and Tina Zhao were next to win, playing against Teresa Change and Michelle Fan (21-14, 21-15). Lastly, Celeste Bloom and Jenny Jiang competed against fellow Owl Elise Phung and her partner from Swarthmore Jing Jing Gopinath in a two-set win (21-15, 21-11).

Junior Natalie Ariza-Fandino and sophomore Rufei Li also represented the Owls over the weekend.

Overall, the day was a success for the Bryn Mawr badminton program.
