Bryn Mawr Opens Season With Solid Battle at Arcadia

Box Score

GLENSIDE, PA. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball squad finally got their 2022 campaign kicked off on Thursday night, as the Owls traveled just down the road to Glenside for a non-conference battle at Arcadia. Bryn Mawr put on a strong effort throughout their season-opening matchup, but unfortunately fell short to the Knights by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-14) scoreline. Zoe Boxill led Bryn Mawr with six kills in the contest while Sydney Collins added four more. Anna Dravk tallied 15 assists in her Owls debut.

Arcadia opened the action with three straight points in the first set, but Bryn Mawr settled down for a second with their first point of the season on a kill by Boxill to get on the board. The Knights took off from there however, scoring 13 of the next 15 points to take a 16-4 advantage. Elise Perry used a nice feed from Dravk to get her first career kill for the Owls to stop that rally. Then a little later, Bryn Mawr went on a run of their own, winning five out of six points, including kills from Boxill and Sydney Munnerlyn, to get back within 19-10. The Owls would get an ace from Abigail Koppisch a little later in the set, but it would prove to be too late to make a difference in the result as Arcadia won the opener by a 25-16 score.

Bryn Mawr made things a little tighter in the opening part of the second set. Arcadia once again jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but an error from the Knights and a kill from Collins on another nice set by Dravk tied the set back up at 3-3. Micah Sheppard got her first career kill a few points later, and several more errors from the hosts kept Bryn Mawr within 9-8. After a brief run from the Knights, Munnerlyn ripped another kill and Boxill added two more to get the Owls back within 15-12. However, that would be as close as the visitors could get in the frame, as Arcadia won ten of the next 12 points to take the second set by a 25-14 score.

The Owls grabbed an early lead in the third frame, using a pair of errors from Arcadia to take a 2-1 advantage. The teams would trade blows over the next several points, with Perry and Collins throwing down several big kills for the Owls to keep things tied up. Later, several more errors from the Knights got Bryn Mawr within 10-8. However, Arcadia would win the next eight points in the set to take an 18-8 advantage. Boxill posted another big kill to put a stop to that rally, and then the Owls got a couple more kills from Boxill and Collins later in the frame to get them back within eight points. However, one last three-point run from the hosts gave Arcadia a 25-14 win to clinch the 3-0 victory on the night.

Despite the tough result, Bryn Mawr had plenty of student-athletes record their first career kills or aces in the contest, the Owls' veterans showed some signs of an offensive spark, and Dravk posted a solid career debut as Bryn Mawr's setter. That should give the Owls plenty to look forward to over the rest of this upcoming season, with Bryn Mawr's next look at the court set for Saturday afternoon. The Owls will play their home-opener on Saturday here in Bryn Mawr, with gametime against Keystone College set for 1:00 PM in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.
