The Owls Put Together Solid Showing on Wednesday Evening

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball team jumped out to early leads in each of the first two sets, but the Washington College Shorewomen were equal to the challenge as the visitors pulled out a 3-0 victory on Wednesday (25-18, 25-17, 25-17).

The Owls drop to 6-9 overall, 0-4 in Centennial Conference play, while the Shorewomen improve to 10-7, 2-1 in the Centennial.

Bryn Mawr sprinted ahead 9-3 in the opening frame behind kills from Anna Dravk and Elise Perry, a Micah Sheppard ace, and several Washington hitting errors.  The Shorewomen responded by winning six of the next seven points, before a Sydney Collins kill and a pair of Washington setting errors put the Owls ahead 14-11.

From there the set belonged to the visitors, who turned the three point deficit into a three point advantage 18-15 on the serve of Jordan Fairchild.

Bryn Mawr would get no closer, and Logan Kenny closed out the set with a pair of aces.

The second set started similarly for Bryn Mawr behind the serving of Orli McGuire-Berk and Sheppard, as the Owls opened leads of 3-0 and 7-2.  Courtney Maxwell recorded three of her nine kills on the night in a 8-0 scoring run as Washington regained the lead for good at 10-7.

Though the Owls competed to keep the set tight and Zoe Boxill found the floor for three kills 10-9, 11-10, and 14-11, a 4-0 Washington run and a pair of late aces closed out the set 25-17.

The third set was highlighted by a pair of 3-0 runs for Bryn Mawr, the first of which leveled play 6-6.  But the visitors ran of six of the next seven points, forcing an Owl timeout at 12-7.  Though Bryn Mawr regrouped to win three of the next five thanks to a pair of attacking errors and a Sheppard kill, Washington used a 4-0 run of their own to open their largest lead of the set.

Maxwell's final kill sealed the match as Washington took their seventh straight match against the Owls.

Angelina Schaber of the Shorewomen led all players with 10 kills on the night, while Boxill led Bryn Mawr with six.

The Owls return to Class of 1958 gym on Saturday as they host five-time defending Centennial champion Johns Hopkins.
