Box Score Chester, Pa. – It's been nearly two years since the Bryn Mawr soccer team last saw competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the drought came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Owls took to the pitch and opened the 2021 season at Widener. Both teams looked to have not missed a beat since their last time out, but overtime proved to be the difference maker as Widener freshman Alyssa Carman netted the lone goal of the game, securing a 1-0 victory for the Pride. Bryn Mawr goalkeeper Emma Ryan put on a strong performance for the Owls with eight key saves.
Widener came out looking strong with a fury of shots within the first 10 minutes of play, but Ryan was there, making two beautiful saves to keep the Pride from gaining the early lead. Bryn Mawr looked to put the Owls up one in the 25th minute as Paige Mastripolito took a shot on goal that met the hands of goalkeeper Samantha Coon. The Pride continued their search for the lead with two more shot attempts in the first half, however a valiant effort from the Owls' backline kept the score even going into halftime.
Bryn Mawr looked to bounce back in the second half as Elizabeth Hummel tried to put the Owls on the board in the 54th minute with a shot that went just right of the goal. Widener began to gain momentum again, unleashing a series of shots on Ryan, but she showed no signs of giving up, putting on a stellar performance in goal with six total saves in the second half. Last-minute efforts came from Mastripolito and Widener's Hannah Beard as both women hoped to secure victory for their respective teams, however neither ball found the net and zeroes across the board signaled the end of regulation and move into overtime.
The Owls seemed to have the advantage in overtime with back-to-back corner kicks, but a breakaway play from Carman sealed the deal for Widener as she found the back of the goal, picking up her first collegiate goal.
The Owls look to rebound as they face a quick recovery today before traveling back down to Chester County tomorrow to face Immaculata. Gametime is slated for 11:00 AM.
