Field Hockey Falls in First Centennial Conference Game

Box Score

GETTYSBURGH, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team opened Centennial Conference play Friday afternoon as they headed west to face an evenly-matched Gettysburg team. While first-year Novy Goetgeluk landed a goal off a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter, the Owls were unable to forge a comeback as they'd fall 1-2 to the Bullets. Thekla Jubinville led the team with four shots, one on goal, while goalie Maggie Titus picked up eight saves.

Gettysburg wasted no time showing their dominance as they did not allow a single shot from the Owls in the first quarter. While Titus landed her first save seven minutes in, the Bullets quickly responded with a goal seconds later as Lauren Beccaria nailed the ball into the lower left corner of the cage, earning her first of the season. Gettysburg looked to extend their lead early on with shots from Emma Bertrando and Jenna Fraiman, but Titus remained focused and in the zone, picking up two more saves. Claire McGowan took a penalty corner for Bryn Mawr with under a minute left, but the Owls couldn't capitalize and the game remained at 1-0.

The second quarter was off to a seemingly different start as Bryn Mawr quickly turned the tide and held the Bullets to just one shot as they would pick up five. Jubinville struck first for the Owls, but her shot was wide of the cage. Courtney Cutone stepped up to the plate next as she unleashed a duo of shots, but one fell wide and the other blocked. Sara Rilatt looked to capitalize off a penalty corner by McGowan, however Gettysburg's Eilene Besselman was there with the save. Bryn Mawr's Kate Ervin hoped to find the equalizer with four minutes left in the half, but with her shot also wide, the Owls were left trailing at halftime.

The game's momentum flip-flopped once again in the third quarter as Gettysburg came out looking strong with three shots on goal. Ryann McManus attempted to put Bryn Mawr on the board three minutes in, but the shot was saved again by Besselman. While the Bullets kept the pressure coming with two more shots, so did the Owls as Skyer Hauser and Jubinville pushed with three shots of their own. The quarter came to an end, pending a penalty corner from Gettysburg, however this corner proved to make all the difference as Alex Wenz found the cage and put the Bullets up two.

With 15 minutes left of gameplay, the Owls were ready for a fight as they looked to bounce back and leave Gettysburg victorious. The fourth quarter saw an impressive showing from the defensive line and Titus as the Bullets would not get a single chance to land another shot and extend their lead. Rilatt and Ervin sought to put the Owls within one early on, but the first went wide and the other was blocked. Cutone, Jubinville and Ervin would take shots again with over five minutes left, but with time winding down, Gettysburg appeared stronger than ever and looked to keep the Owls at arm's length of a victory. Bryn Mawr's opportunity to change the game came with three minutes left as Goetgeluk stepped up to take a penalty stroke and found the back of the cage to put the team within one. With the Owls fired up and still a chance to tie the game, Titus was pulled from the cage and Sarah Chapman came in, looking to spearhead an offensive attack and find the equalizer. The last-minute push would not be enough though as Bryn Mawr could not find another goal-scoring opportunity and the score would remain 1-2 as the clock hit 0:00.00.

Bryn Mawr field hockey continues in conference play as they face Haverford at Applebee Field this Wednesday, September 29. Gametime is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
