Box Score It was a great day for a field hockey match Saturday afternoon as the Bryn Mawr Owls faced the York College Spartans at Kinsley Field. Despite a hustling effort from the Owls in the fourth quarter to rally the team, it was York who earned the 2-0 win after two first-half goals from the Spartans. Goalie Maggie Titus picked up six saves in the contest, a season high for the senior.
The first quarter of action saw a quick goal by the Spartans as Hannah Huffman netted her fourth goal of the season within the first three minutes of the game. A back-and-forth contest ensued with both teams looking evenly matched and the Owls hoping to find the equalizer early on. Bryn Mawr's Lilith Weinlick took two penalty corners, the last scoring attempts of the quarter, but neither resulted in an Owls' goal and the team trailed by one.
York came out strong in the second quarter, looking to expand upon their lead with two shots and a penalty corner early on, but the Owls' defense and Titus would hold the Spartans as Titus picked up her first save of the game. The Spartans bounced back with another penalty corner just a minute later, this time capitalizing on the goal-scoring opportunity to put the team up by two. The pressure was on for the Owls as the Spartans continued to bring the heat with a flurry of shots, but the Owls showed their resilience as Titus earned two more saves. A last-minute effort from Hazel Miller sought to put Bryn Mawr on the board before halftime, but York goalie Kaitlyn Wallace was there with the save.
After the half, the third quarter posed a bit of a stalemate as only two shots were taken, resulting in two monstrous saves from Titus. With 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Owls showed no sign of giving up, responding with a shot from Thekla Jubinville and back-to-back shots from Ryann McManus. However, with no shots finding the cage and the clock dwindling down, the Owls would suffer their first loss of the season to a dominant York team.
The Owls remain on the road for their next competition as they face the Neumann Knights on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00PM.
