Field Hockey Picks Up Dramatic 1-0 Win at Washington College

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Bryn Mawr field hockey squad played their second overtime contest in as many games on Wednesday night, but fortunately for the Owls, the result was a bit different this time around. Sarah Chapman scored with under two minutes to go in the first extra frame, giving Bryn Mawr a much-deserved 1-0 victory in a game they controlled from start to finish. Maggie Titus made three important saves for the Owls to earn her fifth shutout win of the season.

The Owls set the tone early on in the contest, earning a penalty corner just 43 seconds into the action. Ultimately, Bryn Mawr would earn four penalty corners in the first quarter and get off four shots. However, three of those shots would get blocked, and Shorewomen goalkeeper Sasha Dennis made the save on the fourth of those attempts, keeping the Owls off the board in the frame. The story would remain the same in the second frame, as Bryn Mawr tallied three more penalty corners and four more shots, but still couldn't get anything past Dennis. On the other end, Titus made the save on the only shot she faced in the first half, sending the two teams to the break still knotted at 0-0.

In the third quarter, Bryn Mawr really ratcheted up the pressure. The visitors sent an absolute barrage of shots towards the Shorewomen cage, getting ten shots on goal out of 14 taken and earning another ten penalty corners to their tally as well. Kate Ervin had the first shot of the period for the Owls, and the ball appeared headed for the back of the net, but Washington College's Kate Gromacki got a stick on the ball before it crossed the endline for a huge defensive save for the hosts. Then it was Claire McGowan's turn to make a big defensive save of her own on a shot from the Shorewomen. Ten minutes into the frame, Bryn Mawr had another fantastic chance, as Sara Rilatt got a great shot off of a penalty corner, but sent the ball just a foot wide of the cage. The relentless assault continued, but Dennis piled up ten saves in the period to again keep Bryn Mawr off the board.

The final quarter proved to be a nervy, back-and-forth affair with each side having chances. Titus was forced into another save and the Shorewomen put a ball just wide of the right post to give Bryn Mawr a reprieve, while the Owls had two penalty corners and three shots go just awry, with Dennis making two saves of her own in the period.

That all added up to extra time in the contest, and it was Washington College who would get more of the chances in the first overtime period. The Shorewomen had two shots blocked, another saved by Titus, and had another go just wide in the first six minutes of action in the frame. However, Bryn Mawr weathered the storm, then finally took advantage with time ticking away. With the Owls attacking into the Shorewomen end, Hazel Miller put a ball into the center of the circle, where Chapman was waiting. From about five yards out, the sophomore redirected the pass into the left side of the cage, sparking a raucous celebration from the Bryn Mawr contingent and giving the Owls the 1-0 win.

With the victory, Bryn Mawr moves to 7-3 on the season and 2-2 in Centennial Conference play. The Owls will now get a week between contests, as they will return home to Applebee Field on Wednesday, October 13 for a huge Centennial Conference game against Ursinus. Game time against the Bears is slated for 4:00 PM in Bryn Mawr.
