Field Hockey Puts on a Valiant Effort Against Franklin & Marshall

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa.- The Bryn Mawr field hockey team celebrated Senior Day Saturday afternoon before facing the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats in Centennial Conference action. While both teams appeared evenly matched, putting on aggressive styles of play, a second quarter goal by the Diplomats proved to be enough as the Owls fell 0-1. Senior Sara Rilatt led in shots for the Owls with three, while Franklin & Marshall's Sophie Carroll led the team with six. Bryn Mawr goalie Maggie Titus nabbed nine saves in the matchup, her most saves in a single game this season.

The Owls came out strong in the first period with four shot attempts and held the Diplomats to two. Bryn Mawr's Hazel Miller struck first just before the five-minute mark with a shot that went wide, followed by another shot a minute later that resulted in a defensive save for Franklin & Marshall's Alison McCarey. The Diplomats looked to shift momentum before the 8th minute as Carroll took the first shot for the team, but the ball went wide of the cage. Jessica Miller hoped to put Franklin & Marshall on the board next, but Titus was there for the timely save. Owls' defender Paige Schaefer stepped up for two penalty corners to close out the first period, but despite shots from Rilatt and Eva Yacura, the ball failed to find the back of the cage, keeping the score at 0-0.

The tide shifted early in the second period as back-to-back penalty corners from the Diplomats resulted in a goal from Carroll, assisted by Kat Study. With the game swinging in their favor, Franklin & Marshall looked to score again minutes later, but this time Jessica Miller's shot fell wide of the cage. Olivia Supron and Meghan O'Shea both looked to find the equalizer for Bryn Mawr before halftime, but the strong defensive line of the Diplomats brought the heat, helping them keep the lead going into the half.

Unfortunately for the Owls, the Diplomats did not let up any pressure in the third period as they held Bryn Mawr to only one shot attempt. Carroll appeared to be on the hunt for her second goal of the game with a shot in the 38th minute and leading scorer, Carolina Riley, looked to come out on top with a shot a minute later, but Titus, reenergized and focused as ever, saved both to move her game total up to four. Franklin & Marshall's Darby Klopp took a shot in the 42nd minute that was yet again saved by Titus, and while Jessica Miller was there for a rebound shot attempt, Owls' Claire McGowan was there to save the game as she added another defensive save to her stats this season. Rosa Cochran took the lone shot attempt for the Owls this period off a penalty corner by Schaefer, but her shot was saved by goalie Sydney Lippe and Bryn Mawr remained trailing after the third.

The fourth period saw a flurry of penalty corners and goal-scoring opportunities as the Diplomats came out with six straight penalty corners, resulting in three separate shot attempts. Fortunately for the Owls though, a combined team effort kept Franklin & Marshall at bay as Titus picked up a save and Rilatt and Schaefer each picked up defensive saves. Bryn Mawr followed with five penalty corners that saw scoring attempts by Rilatt and Cochran, however Lippe looked rock-solid in the cage as she saved all three shots. The Diplomats would keep Titus on her heels in the 55th minute with three quick shots in the span of 14 seconds, but with her composure kept tight, Titus picked up her final three saves of the game. Head coach Victor Brady pulled Titus from the cage with about a minute and 30 seconds left to play in hopes that the extra field player could help set up an equalizer scoring chance, but the clock ran down and cemented victory for the Diplomats.

Up next, the Owls face their last home competition of the season on Wednesday, October 27 as they take on Swarthmore at 4:00 PM.
