Volleyball Shows Great Effort in Final Non-Conference Match

Box Score

LANGHORNE MANOR, Pa. – For their last non-conference game, the Bryn Mawr volleyball team headed to Bucks County to face the Cairn Highlanders in a rescheduled matchup from earlier this season. The Owls looked to end their eight-game losing streak with a win that would get momentum going for the remainder of the season however, despite closing in on the Highlanders in all three sets, Cairn was able to squeeze by while the Owls fell 0-3. Zoe Boxill led both teams in kills with 11 and Sydney Collins landed all but two assists for a game total of 21.

The Owls took the early lead, going up 4-1 with three straight kills from Nicole Wood, but Cairn responded with five consecutive points to take the lead over Bryn Mawr. Each team continued to go on runs of their own throughout the frame yet stayed neck-and-neck as they brought the heat and looked to gain the match advantage with a win in the first set. The Owls showed a combined team effort as Boxill picked up numerous kills and aces, Sydney Munnerlyn with a kill of her own and aces from Orli McGuire-Berk and Thandie Eversley to keep Bryn Mawr ahead 19-17. While the Owls hoped to close in on a first set victory, the Highlanders powered back to go on another five-point run to close the set 22-25.

Bryn Mawr came out looking strong again in the second set to go up 5-2. The lead was short lived though as Cairn would go on a nine-point run this time, followed by a four-point and three-point run to raise the scoreboard up 7-18. With a timeout called by Owls' head coach Hayley Kirby, Bryn Mawr hoped to turn the set around as Munnerlyn, Wood and Boxill each helped add to the team's score, alongside errors from the Highlanders. Despite another kill from Munnerlyn and aces from Boxill and Eversley, Cairn's lead proved to be too strong of a match for the Owls as an error closed out the set and the Highlanders won 18-25.

The third set saw a different story as both teams came out evenly matched, meeting one another point for point to start. Cairn would go on a four-point run before Bryn Mawr followed with their own three-point run to put the score at 9-9. With Wood tallying two more kills and Boxill with one for the Owls, plus numerous errors by the Highlanders, Bryn Mawr narrowed Cairn's lead to two as the scoreboard sat at 17-19. The end of the set looked to be an all-out fight as both teams rallied behind one another in hopes of claiming the third set, but it was the Highlanders who came out on top as a three-point run closed the set 22-25 and gave Cairn the match win.

The Owls return home for their final two home matches of the season starting with the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats this Saturday, October 23. Gametime is slated for 1:00 PM in the Class of 1958 Gym.
