Field Hockey Drops to Dickinson in Shootout Heartbreak

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team took to the field Saturday afternoon as they celebrated homecoming with a match against conference rival, Dickinson. The Red Devils struck first in the contest, but an equalizer from the Owls forced the game into double overtime and a shootout. While Hazel Miller was able to nail the first shot of the shootout, Dickinson secured two back-to-back, ultimately giving them the victory 2-1. The Owls picked up 12 shots in the game, with eight on goal, and goalie Maggie Titus went on to make five saves.

The first quarter kicked off with five minutes of back-and-forth action as neither team could get an offensive attack going and the two looked evenly matched. Miller was the first to take a shot, but her shot was blocked as the game continued. Unfortunately, Dickinson's first shot was also their first goal as Morgan Yandow-Hardin picked up her first for the season off an assist by Sierra Bobb. While Eva Yacura took a shot at tying up the game minutes later, her shot was saved by goalie Saige Stevens and was the last attempt by an Owl this quarter, sending them into the second down by one.

Fortunately, the second quarter was Yacura's time to shine as a scuffle by the cage pushed the ball into the open, allowing her to take a shot and land her first goal of the season. In a strange turn of events, Yacura's shot was the only shot made the entire second quarter as the two teams remained neck-and-neck, bringing the heat on both the offensive and defensive attacks and sending the game into halftime tied at 1-1

Dickinson came out looking strong in the third quarter as they began unleashing a series of shots looking to take the lead over the Owls. Off these shots, Titus would pick up her first two saves of the game with another shot blocked and another stopped with a defensive save from Courtney Cutone. With under five minutes to go, Meghan O'Shea came out with a breakaway opportunity to give the Owls the advantage, but her shot went just wide of the goal and the quarter ended still tied at 1-1.

With 15 minutes left in regulation, both teams were at the top of their game, searching for the perfect opportunity to land a late goal and bring home the victory for their program. However, a shot attempt by Miller was the solo shot for either team in the quarter and the game was sent into overtime.

The Red Devils controlled the first overtime, picking up five shots from Hannah Spiri, Philine Smits and Yandow-Hardin. Miller and Kate Ervin also took shots for the Owls, but with both goalies looking focused as ever, no shot found its way into the cage, and it was time for another overtime. The second overtime saw a shift in momentum as the Owls came out looking strong, firing a multitude of shots at Stevens who showed no signs of giving up, saving all four.

The end seemed to be near as a foul called on Dickinson resulted in a penalty stroke for the Owls with Novy Goetgeluk prepared to take the shot. Unfortunately, Goetgeluk's shot rang off the post and despite a last-minute shot attempt from the Red Devils, the game clock ran out and it was time for a shootout.

While the Owls were able to secure the first shootout attempt from Miller, attempts from Hailey Womer and Bobb looked to be enough for Dickinson to walk away with the victory. However, a foul called on Stevens during Sara Rilatt's shootout attempt meant a penalty stroke for Bryn Mawr to tie and send the game into more shootout attempts. With Rilatt lined up, she fired a shot, looking for the back of the cage, but the shot was met with Stevens' pads, giving Dickinson the win.

Next up, the Owls look to rebound as they hit the road to face Washington College on Wednesday, October 6. Gametime is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
