Volleyball Falls to Ursinus

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – It was a showdown of two evenly-matched Centennial Conference teams in the Class of 1958 Gym Wednesday night as the Bryn Mawr volleyball team faced the Ursinus Bears. While the Owls looked to forge a comeback in the second set with a dominant show, the Bears found their momentum and kept it coming, causing the Owls to fall 0-3 (11-25, 21-25, 12-25). Nicole Wood led the team with six kills and Sydney Collins led with 12 assists.

While the Owls took the early lead at 0-2, the Bears fought back as both teams began to meet point for point on the scoreboard. Ursinus gained control of the set off a six-point run to put them up 11-4, causing Owls' head coach Hayley Kirby to call a timeout. A kill from Zoe Boxill looked to change the game's momentum, but the Bears continued their lead off kills from Haley Spotts, Olivia DeBonte, Gabby McGinn and numerous errors by the Owls. Bryn Mawr would only nab one of the final seven points of the set as Ursinus capitalized with three kills, two aces and an Owls' error to take the first frame, 25-11.

In the second set, Bryn Mawr got off to a very similar start, but slowly began to change the game's tide as a kill from Sydney Munnerlyn and errors from the Bears rose the scoreboard to 6-11, forcing Ursinus to call a timeout. The Bears, looking to have regained their composure, initiated a comeback, and quickly tied the Owls at 15-15. Both teams wrestled for control of the set, matching point for point, however, at 19-19, Ursinus began to pull ahead off numerous errors by Bryn Mawr. While Wood picked up a massive kill to put the score at 22-21, it was not enough and the Bears walked away with a 25-21 win in the set.

Looking to cement another victory for them, Ursinus came out in full control of the third set to go up 5-1. The Owls fought back with back-to-back aces from Wood, followed by a kill from Aaliyah Joseph and ace by Thandie Eversley to catch up to the Bears at 7-6. Ursinus would go on a bit of a run, claiming eight of the next 11 points to hold a 15-8 advantage over the Owls, but Bryn Mawr continued to show some spirit as Wood landed another kill to her game total and the Bears committed numerous errors to help the Owls close in on the lead. Unfortunately, a solid Ursinus team was not ready to give up their lead or the set as they'd go on to capture eight of ten final points to claim the set and game, 24-13.

The Owls return to action on Saturday as they take on McDaniel in the Class of 1958 Gym. Gametime is set for 1:00 PM.
