Bryn Mawr Comes Up Just Short At Gwynedd Mercy

Box Score

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team was back on the road earlier Tuesday evening for a non-conference tilt against Gwynedd Mercy. Though the Owls performed admirably through tough conditions and against a talented Griffins squad, Bryn Mawr was unable to find the back of the net in this one, and the Owls ultimately came up just short in a tight 1-0 loss. Leah Baer and the rest of the Owls' defense did a great job shutting down the Gwynedd Mercy attack for much of the game, with Baer racking up five saves on the night. Erin Reitmeyer got the lone goal of the night for the Griffins, while goalkeeper Kailey Hopkins saved all three shots she faced to earn the shutout for Gwynedd Mercy.

The Owls got the first shot of the night a little over fifteen minutes into the game. Elizabeth Hummel was the one to let it rip, but her effort went just wide to the left. Less than ten minutes later, Bryn Mawr earned back-to-back corner kicks, but were unable to get a shot off on those chances. Later, after weathering a Gwynedd Mercy corner kick, Kass Wojcik had the next great chances for the Owls. The first-year midfielder ripped a shot that Hopkins was just able to save, and then two minutes later, Wojcik would hit the post with another shot attempt. The Owls were doing everything but putting the ball across the endline and into the net, and that allowed Gwynedd Mercy to strike for the lead. A Bryn Mawr foul inside their own box gave the hosts a penalty kick with less than two minutes to go in the first half. Reitmeyer stepped up for the Griffins and slotted the ball home, putting Gwynedd Mercy up 1-0.

Unfortunately, Bryn Mawr's luck didn't change much in the second half. Gwynedd Mercy controlled much of the early part of the half, and then the Owls threw numbers forward looking for the game-tying goal. Emily Elmore got the first chance for the Owls, but her shot was saved by Hopkins. Then, with less than a minute to go, Bryn Mawr earned a corner kick, and the ball ended up at the feet of Wojcik. The first-year ripped one more shot on goal, but Hopkins stood tall and made one final save to close out the game.

Bryn Mawr will look to put tonight's tough loss behind them and prep for a big game on Saturday. Bryn Mawr will return home to Applebee Field this weekend for their Homecoming game against Gettysburg. Game time against the Bullets is set for 12:00 PM.
