Owls Tripped Up on Road by Gettysburg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team hit the road for another Centennial Conference contest earlier Saturday afternoon, this time taking on the Bullets of Gettysburg College. Despite a valiant effort, the Owls could not hang with an ultra-hot Gettysburg on the day, who played some unbelievably clean volleyball on the day en route to a 3-0 win. The Bullets made just four attack errors on 82 attempts while racking up 40 kills to put the Owls in a tough spot. Bryn Mawr tried to hang in against the withering attack, but just didn't have the firepower to stop Gettysburg on the day.

Bryn Mawr (3-14, 0-7 CC) played well to open things up in the first set, with kills by Camille Baechler and Sarah Whitten, and then a service ace from Whitten made it a 4-4 game early on. However, Gettysburg (14-6, 4-2 CC) roared away to a big lead with a 7-1 run. Nolan Julien notched a kill of her own to stem the tide, but it only granted the Owls a momentary reprieve. The Bullets won the next 14 straight points to cruise away and win the opening set 25-6.

The second frame went slightly better for Bryn Mawr, as they were able to hang with the hosts early. Two kills by senior Caroline Cosby helped the Owls stay close with Gettysburg in the opening stages of the set, but then an 8-2 run put the Bullets out in front 14-6. Three straight errors by the hosts momentarily got Bryn Mawr back in the set, but then Gettysburg posted another 7-0 run to go ahead 21-9. Camille Baechler earned another kill to put a halt to that run, and then the first two attack errors of the day by the Bullets drew Bryn Mawr that much closer. However, it was too little too late for the Owls, as Gettysburg closed out the set on a kill by Francesca Garison in 25-12 fashion.

Despite their best efforts, the Owls could find little traction in the third set either, as Gettysburg jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the frame. Kills by Whitten, Cosby, and Sienna Burnett did little to faze the Bullets, as their attack just kept rolling the entire length of the set. When the dust finally settled, Gettysburg took the frame 25-8 to ease away with the 3-0 win on the day.

Bryn Mawr will try to put today's tough results behind them quickly, and they'll get a chance to rebound when they return to action next week. The Owls will face off against their cross-town rivals Haverford on Wednesday, with that match slated to tip off at 7:00 PM at Haverford.
