Owls Come Up Just Short in Thriller at Bryn Athyn

Box Score

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team returned to action earlier Thursday evening with a thrilling contest against Bryn Athyn. The two sides faced off deep into the cool fall evening, needing two overtime frames to determine a winner, but ultimately it was the host Lions who stole the win late in the game. Alexis Boutchie put the Owls on top 1-0 in the first half after a tremendous individual effort, but the hosts tied things up midway through the second half and then got the game-winner just 22 seconds into the final overtime period.

Bryn Athyn (6-7) controlled play early on, with three corner kicks before the four-minute mark. However, Bryn Mawr (1-5-1) made some strong efforts of their own in the opening minutes, with a strong save from Leah Baer and then a shot from Katherine Nickols. That effort scared the net, but flew just high over the crossbar. Later, Elisa Cooney and Alexis Boutchie also added shots of their own, while Bryn Athyn kept the seesaw affair rolling with more corner kicks and several shots of their own. Finally, it was the Owls who broke the seal on the net and tallied the first goal of the game, with Boutchie being responsible. The freshman forward scored her second goal of the season on a strong individual effort, and that 42nd minute goal put Bryn Mawr up 1-0 in the contest.

With the score now in their favor, the Owls focused on keeping their defensive shape and making it difficult for Bryn Athyn to play in the offensive third. The Lions controlled most of the possession and kept probing, but Bryn Mawr held strong along the back and were able to keep their lead well into the second half. However, Bryn Athyn finally broke through in the 66th minute to tie things up. Shauna Breen took a pass from Chelsea Czarnik and slotted home a goal, knotting the game at 1-1. Bryn Mawr tried to regain the lead once more, but Haidyn Weight's shot in the 69th minute went just high, and then a late shot by Catherine Bactat was blocked, sending the teams into overtime.

Bryn Athyn had the first good looks of the first OT frame, but Leah Baer came up with two great saves on the Lions' Shelby Puccio. Then it was the Owls' turn to threaten, as Cooney was able to get free and get a shot off on goal. This time it was the Lions goalkeeper coming up with a big save of her own, keeping the game tied and sending things into the second ten-minute overtime frame. It was there that the hosts would earn their win, as Kristin White scored the game-winner just 22 seconds into play to seal the 2-1 victory for the Lions.

Bryn Mawr will be back in action next week with their final road game of the season, as they will travel just down the road to take on Haverford. That game is set for 4:00 PM on Wednesday the 19th. The Owls will then close out their season with two home games, first against Swarthmore before the Senior Day matchup against John Jay.
