Offense Shines Through in Soccer's Victory Over Neumann

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team picked up their first win of the season earlier Sunday afternoon, and it came in spectacular fashion. The Owls dominated set pieces on the day, scoring twice off of corner kicks en route to a big 3-0 win over the Knights of Neumann University. Three different players netted their first goals of the season in the victorious effort.

The Owls (1-2) controlled play from the beginning, thanks in large part to solid performances from the Owls midfield. With the back line holding strong and keeping everything in front of them, the Bryn Mawr midfielders were able to control the tempo of the match and seek out the probing runs of their forwards. The Owls had four shots and three corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of play, including a great effort by senior midfielder Allegra Levy that forced the Knights goalkeeper into a solid save. All the pressure finally paid off for the Owls on that third corner kick. After controlling play in the final third for several minutes, Neumann (0-3) was ultimately forced to clear a dangerous ball over their own end line. Sophomore midfielder Haidyn Weight stepped up to take the corner kick from the right side. She sent a fantastic left-footed shot curling into the box, with several Bryn Mawr players making runs to attack the cross. Those runs must have confused the Knights goalkeeper, as the ball sailed past everyone at the near post and continued curling straight into the back of the net, giving the Owls an early 1-0 lead.

Neumann tried to respond, and did eventually manage to gain some control of the ball in the attacking third ten minutes later. The Knights were able to get off several shots from outside the box, including a powerful attempt from Kahlyn Ford, but goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky and the rest of the defense were able to either save or block those shots and preserve the shutout.

Later in the half, the Owls would begin their quest for an insurance goal, and once again they would show themselves to be pretty potent on set pieces. After more pressure in the Knights half of the field, Bryn Mawr earned another corner kick. Once again, Weight stepped up to take the corner, this time from the left side. She sent the cross a little higher up the field this time, putting it dangerously right around the penalty spot. Several Neumann players failed on clearing attempts, and suddenly Levy found herself with the ball at her feet and a great look at the goal. The senior would not miss that opportunity, blasting a rocket of a shot into the right side of the net for her first goal of the year and doubling the Owls lead.

Bryn Mawr would get on the board one more time in the game when senior forward Veronica Roux earned a penalty kick just over a minute into the second half. After being ripped down in the box by a Neumann defender, the New Jersey native stepped to the spot to take her own penalty kick. Her shot flew straight past the Knights keeper and into the net, but Roux was actually forced to take it again due to a false start by another player. It was no matter to Roux, who found virtually the same spot with pace to make it a 3-0 game and seal the Owls win.

The Owls almost added a fourth with just a few minutes remaining when Codie Fiedler-Kawaguchi hit the crossbar with a shot from the left side of the box. Alexandra Wiegel followed up the loose ball and had a wide open net in front of her from just six yards out, but it took a bad bounce just as she went to take the shot, causing the ball to sail just over top of the goal.

Bryn Mawr outshot the Knights 17 to 9 on the day in the victorious effort. Kosansky made one save in the contest, and freshman goalkeeper Leah Baer got her first collegiate playing time, making three saves of her own.

With the win, the Owls move to 1-2 so far on this young season. They'll look to build a winning streak when they get back in action next weekend. Bryn Mawr will travel to Mount Holyoke for a tough contest against their fellow Seven Sisters opponent. That game will kick off at 12:00 PM in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
