Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team opened their conference schedule earlier Saturday afternoon. The Owls hosted McDaniel College in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium, and although things began very close for both teams, the visitors ultimately were able to coast to a 3-0 win in the match. Kloe Martin and Lauren Wells co-led all scorers in the match with six kills apiece. For Bryn Mawr, it was Rachel Ofili who led the way with five kills on the day.
McDaniel (9-4, 1-1 CC) got off to a fast start in the opening set of the match. The Green Terror got a kill from Lexi Corral to start off the match, and then three straight attack errors dug Bryn Mawr into a 4-0 hole early. McDaniel ultimately worked their lead all the way up to 17-7, but then Bryn Mawr (5-8, 0-1 CC) started to fight back. A kill from Caroline Cosby and then a McDaniel attack error got the Owls back within eight. Later on, a 5-1 run made up of five attack errors by the Green Terror made it 19-14 in favor of the visitors. McDaniel got their lead back up to 22-16, but then Bryn Mawr got back-to-back kills from Noemi Moreno to climb back within four points. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Owls could get in the set. McDaniel won the final three points to take the win in the set by a score of 25-18.
With the momentum from taking the first set, McDaniel really ramped up their play in the next two frames to put pressure on the Owls. After making eight attack errors in the first frame, the visitors were able to cut down on those while ramping up their hitting percentage in the final two sets. Bryn Mawr, meanwhile, went from ten kills in the first set to just nine total over the remainder of the match. That combination spelled bad news for the Owls. In the second set, McDaniel got all the way out to a 19-9 lead before a service error got Bryn Mawr back within nine. The visitors simply started another run, closing out the set on a 6-1 run to take the 25-11 win. Then in the third frame, McDaniel jumped ahead to leads of 6-0 and 10-1 before coasting to a 25-15 win of the set.
With the loss, the Owls slip to 5-8 on the season. They'll be right back in action next week however, with a chance to get in the win column against another Centennial Conference opponent. The Owls will host Ursinus on Wednesday night in the Class of 1958 Gym on campus for a 7:00 PM start. Last season, the Owls went on the road to Ursinus and played one of their best matches of the season. After falling behind 2-0 early, the Owls battled all the way back to force a decisive fifth set, in which they came up just short. Bryn Mawr will look to get some revenge at home this year on Wednesday night.
