Ofili Tallies 1000th Kill in Loss at Muhlenberg

Box Score

Allentown, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball squad got another milestone performance out of senior Rachel Ofili earlier Wednesday evening, but it wasn't enough to pull of an upset. Facing a talented team at Muhlenberg College, Ofili surpassed the 1000-kill mark with a 14-kill evening, but the hosts were able to weather that attack and take a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) win. The Mules were led by Allison Glass, who put up 15 kill to lead all players in the match.

Bryn Mawr (6-10, 1-3 CC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening set, but Muhlenberg stormed right back to take a 7-3 advantage and force Owls head coach Nicole Reiley to take a timeout. That brief stoppage seemed to help, as Bryn Mawr clawed their way back and managed to tie the match at 10-all on Ofili's first kill of the night. However, Muhlenberg (13-5, 4-2 CC) extended their advantage back out to four points with a quick run, and although the Owls tried to keep in contact with their hosts, the Mules would close out the set with one final kill to take the first frame 25-18.

In the second set, Ofili came alive and did most of the Owls' damage. The talented senior got Bryn Mawr their first point of the set with her fourth kill of the evening. Muhlenberg ran out to a big lead early, going up 11-2 in the opening portion of the set. Midway through the set, Ofili tallied two kills in a row to make it a 7-15 scoreline and put her one kill away from 1000. She would get that last kill just a few minutes later, as Zoe Holman put up one of her 27 assists on the evening and Ofili slammed home one more of her trademark spikes. The Owls managed to get back within four points at several points in the set, but once again Muhlenberg finished strong to close out the set in 25-17 fashion.

Once again, Ofili started out the third set with the Owls, and although Muhlenberg tried to get out to another big lead early, Bryn Mawr used a four-point run to tie the frame at 6-6. The Mules jumped ahead again with another burst, but Bryn Mawr got back-to-back kills from Ofili again to tie the set at 11-11. After another Muhlenberg run, an Ofili kill and two attack errors by the hosts made it a 14-15 set. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Owls would get in the final frame, as the Mules stormed to victory with a 10-1 run to close out the match.

Ofili led the Owls on the night with her 14 kill, four block performance. The Owls also had a good night all-around defensively. Alexandra Nagelski led the way with 16 digs, while Megan Kilmer and Caroline Cosby added eight and six respectively. One area where Muhlenberg was able to counter a Bryn Mawr strength was in the service game. Normally a big part of the Owls scoring, Bryn Mawr managed to put up just one ace on the night, as the Mules played very solid in their receiving game.

The Owls will be right back in action this weekend as they continue their three-game road trip. Bryn Mawr will travel to Carlisle, Pa. for another Centennial Conference matchup against Dickinson College on Saturday. The Owls will look to pick up their second league win of the season and get back into a winning swing, while Ofili will look to make another run at history. The senior now sits just ten kills away from tying the record for most kills in a career at Bryn Mawr. Ofili and the rest of the Owls will aim to start strong and take home a big win on Saturday, with the match set to tip off at 1:00 PM.
