Owls Close Conference Play With Tough Loss to Johns Hopkins

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team played their final Centennial Conference match of the season earlier Friday night, facing a difficult opponent in Johns Hopkins. Though the Owls battled hard, the Blue Jays were able to rack up too many kills on the night, ultimately taking home a 3-0 win in the contest. Rachel Ofili led Bryn Mawr with five kills on the evening, but it was Erica Johnston of Johns Hopkins who led all scorers with nine.

Johns Hopkins (11-10, 7-2 CC) jumped out to a commanding lead right off the bat, as the visitors went on a 5-0 run right out of the gate. Bryn Mawr (6-16, 1-9 CC) battled back valiantly over the next few points, ultimately working their way back within 8-6 on a kill from Ofili. However, in a run that would become a trend the entire evening, the Blue Jays quickly put the set out of reach by going on a 10-0 rally, including five service aces from Elizabeth Wuerstle. The Owls climbed back to within 12 eventually, but Johns Hopkins closed out the set and took a 25-12 win in the opening frame.

The second set started a little better for the Owls, as they got off to a 3-1 lead early on thanks to kills from Ofili and Sarah Gates. However, once again the Blue Jays would go on a big run and take a 10-3 lead in the set. Bryn Mawr got back within 14-11 on yet another kill from Ofili, but that was as close as the Owls would come, as Johns Hopkins ultimately took the set by a score of 25-15. The third set followed a similar pattern as the first, almost down to the exact play-by-play, as Johns Hopkins closed out the match with another 25-12 win in the frame.

The Owls will still have one more day to pick up a couple more wins in 2015, as the squad closes out their season tomorrow with a home tri-match. Bryn Mawr opens the day in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium with an 11:00 AM match against the College of Staten Island. Then, after the two visiting teams have faced off at 1:00 PM, Bryn Mawr will take on Penn State Abington in their final match of the season. The Owls will also celebrate Senior Day tomorrow, as the program hopes to send out their five senior players on a high note with a pair of victories.
