Soccer Comes Up Just Short in Back-and-Forth Battle on Senior Day

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - On a day where both sides played virtually even on Applebee Field, it was the visiting Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall who capitalized on their chances in the final third to take home a 2-0 win. Try as they might, and despite out-cornering the visitors by a tally of 6-4, Bryn Mawr was unable to get that one crucial touch to send a ball into the netting. The Owls commended the careers of its nine senior players by celebrating Senior Day this afternoon, and each one of them had a big impact on the game, but the result unfortunately did not go their way.

Bryn Mawr (2-8, 0-3 CC) had a majority of the good looks in the opening minutes of play in the contest. In the 11th minute, senior forward Alice Bell managed to get a shot off towards goal, but Franklin & Marshall's Shannon Johnson-Finn managed to make a good save. The Diplomats (3-5-1, 1-2 CC) began to test Bryn Mawr a bit more as the half wore on. At one point, Katie Kerr rattled off two shots in 30 seconds for the visitors, but senior goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky was able to make a save on one of those attempts while the other fizzled harmlessly wide of the cage.

It was a foul that finally did Bryn Mawr in for Franklin & Marshall's first goal. The Diplomats started a counter attack down the left side of the field and managed to earn a free kick just inside the attacking third. Sarah Mischianti stepped up and sent a great ball that got carried by the wind towards the far post. Kosansky came out to try and catch the cross, but the ball slipped from her hands and fell to the ground. It landed right at the feet of a waiting Kerr, who slotted the ball calmly into the right side of the net to put the visitors up 1-0 midway through the half.

Bryn Mawr did a good job of responding, with their best chance for a goal before halftime coming after another foul. Senior Nina Bertolami stepped up just inside midfield and sent a high floating ball dangerously around the Diplomats penalty spot. However, Johnson-Finn managed to beat all other players to that point and outjumped everyone to get her mitts on the cross and shut down the attack.

The Owls continued to press into the second half, looking for an equalizer. Bell got another opportunity to put a shot on net, but it went just wide to the right of the goal. Later, in a span of three minutes, Bertolami had two chances, but both of her shots went over the crossbar for a goal kick. Bryn Mawr could not capitalize on any of their corner kick opportunities either, as the crosses either did not make it to the box or were cleared out of harm by the Franklin & Marshall defense.

After weathering a vicious Bryn Mawr attack in their attempt to get an equalizer, the Diplomats finally got an insurance goal with just over seven minutes left to play. This time, the roles were reversed for the visitors, as it was Kerr who send a free kick into the box that Mischianti got on the receiving end of and managed to score from in close on the Owls net. One final shot from Bertolami was the last chance for the Owls, and when the horn sounded, Bryn Mawr was stuck on the wrong end of a 2-0 loss.

It was a tough result for the nine Bryn Mawr seniors who played in one of their last games on Applebee Field this Senior Day, but the Owls will have a few more chances to get a win at home before the season is out. Up next, however, the Owls will kick off a three-game road trip starting this Wednesday with a visit up to Muhlenberg College. It will be Bryn Mawr's first night game since taking on Goucher in the season opener, as the Owls will face off against the Mules at 7:00 PM in Allentown.
