Volleyball Battles, But Can't Overcome Fords

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team put up a great fight earlier Wednesday evening against their cross-town rivals from Haverford. The Owls battled hard for three sets, but were unable to come up with a win in any of the sets in a 3-0 loss. Meg O'Day led all scorers in the match with twelve kills for the Fords. Rachel Ofili led the Owls with nine kills, while Allie Nagelski had a terrific defensive match, diving all over the floor multiple times to record 14 digs.

Haverford (16-8, 6-1 CC) got off to a fast start in tonight's match, jumping out to quick leads in both the first and second sets. Ultimately, Haverford took a 2-0 lead in the match by winning the first two sets in 25-13 and 25-15 fashion. However, Bryn Mawr (6-14, 1-7 CC) didn't let that rough start get them down. The Owls started the third set with a service ace from Zoe Holman, and that seemed to give them some momentum to get off to a good start. After a kill from O'Day, Haverford made a service error and then three straight attack errors to send Bryn Mawr to a quick 5-1 lead.

Haverford tried to get back in the set right away, but errors continued to foil the Fords early. Ofili got Bryn Mawr their first kill of the set to make it a 7-4 Bryn Mawr lead, and then she repeated that feat a few points later to make it 9-6. Haverford went on a 5-0 run to get back out in front by two points, but Bryn Mawr continued to hang in there in the set. A Sarah Gates kill and another attack error tied the frame at 11-11. A few points later, a kill from Noemi Moreno and then a service ace from the senior outside hitter made it 16-all. Later, Caroline Cosby nailed a kill off of a Haverford block attempt to give Bryn Mawr back the lead at 18-17. Unfortunately, that would be the end of the line for Bryn Mawr, as the Fords would buckle down and close out the match on an 8-2 run to take the 3-0 victory on the night.

The Owls will have a few more chances to get back in the win column, and that starts with their next match next week. Bryn Mawr will get the weekend off and return to action on Tuesday night with a matchup against Tri-Co companion Swarthmore. The Owls will travel down to Swarthmore for the 7:00 PM tip on Tuesday, October 27th.
