Box Score 2 Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball squad bounced back from last week's loss to Arcadia in spectacular fashion today with a pair of victories in their home-opening Bryn Mawr Tri-Match. The Owls dominated play for most of the day, defeating both Delaware Valley and Bryn Athyn by 3-0 scores to push their record to 4-1 in the young 2014 season. Senior setter Danielle Preziuso combined for 50 total assists on the day, while junior Rachel Ofili added 21 total kills over the two matches to help lead Bryn Mawr to victory.
In the first of two matches on the day, the Owls faced off against Delaware Valley. The Aggies (0-5) came into the match looking to bounce back from a rough start to the season, but Bryn Mawr would have none of that. In the first set of the match, the Yellow and White blasted home ten kills on 24 attack attempts, for a solid kill percentage of .333. Combine that with the eight errors made by Delaware Valley and the Owls took home the set in easy 25-8 fashion. The second game went similarly to the first, with the Aggies' nine errors leading to too many easy points for the hosts.
However, Delaware Valley made a game of it in the third set. At one point, the Aggies held a 17-15 lead in the frame, but Bryn Mawr regrouped to score the next six points, capped off by back-to-back kills by Noemi Moreno, to take a 21-17 lead. A service ace by Preziuso got the Owls within one point of the win before a kill by Gina Page staved off Delaware Valley's immanent defeat. However, the Aggies served the ball into the net on the next point, handing Bryn Mawr the 3-0 victory.
In match two, Bryn Mawr once again got off to a hot start, this time against the Lions of Bryn Athyn. The Owls dominated the first set from the start, winning the first seven points to put things out of reach early. Caroline Cosby closed out the set with a big spike off an assist from Preziuso to give the Yellow and White a 25-15 victory in the first frame. Bryn Mawr did even more damage in the second frame, putting up 12 kills en route to a 25-10 thrashing. The Owls closed out the set by winning the final four points, including another kill by Cosby and a service ace on a great serve by Avary Taylor.
Once again, the third set proved more difficult to close out than the previous two. Bryn Athyn (2-1) ran out to a 5-2 lead early on, thanks in most part to several errors by the Owls front line. Even later in the set, the Lions got within 16-18 thanks to some timely kills and aces. However, the Owls buckled down, winning seven of the final ten points of the match and closing out the 3-0 win.
With the wins, Bryn Mawr moves to 4-1 on the season. The team will look to continue its great start to the campaign when they take on Neumann in their next match on Tuesday night. Game time between the Knights and head coach Nicole Reiley's Owls is slated for 7:00 PM in the Schwartz Athletic Center.
