Volleyball Dominates in 3-0 Victory Over Cedar Crest

Box Score

Bryn Mawr, Pa. – Bryn Mawr's volleyball squad snapped a two-match losing streak earlier Tuesday night with a dominating victory over Cedar Crest. Back inside the friendly confines of the Class of 1958 Gymnasium, the Owls got back to basics in a 3-0 sweep of the Falcons. Sarah Gates led the way with 12 kills on the evening, while Danielle Preziuso led the team in assists, digs, and aces with a solid all-around effort.

The Owls (8-6, 0-0 Centennial) actually showed a little rust right out of the gates, as they let Cedar Crest (1-9, 1-0 CSAC) jump ahead to an early 9-6 lead. However, Bryn Mawr soon corrected that, as they immediately went on a 12-point run to assert their dominance. After a service error from the Falcons put Bryn Mawr on serve, Preziuso went to work. An attack error from the visitors made it a 9-8 game, and then the senior setter tallied four straight service aces to give the Owls the lead. Ellen Chiu, Avary Taylor, and Gates all put home kills in the run as well, and by the time Cedar Crest finally got a side-out, Bryn Mawr had doubled them up and led 18-9. The visitors would only score two more points after that, as the Yellow and Black closed out the first set on a six-point run to take the frame in 25-11 fashion.

Set two was arguably one of the best sets of the season for the Owls. The team posted their second highest hitting percentage in a set on the year by making 14 kills against just three errors in 29 attempts. That was good enough for a .379 percentage, and helped Bryn Mawr coast to a 25-8 win in the frame. The Owls won the first seven points of the game, and then continued to dominate throughout. A kill from Gates, her sixth of the set, mercifully ended the frame and gave the visitors a brief respite. However, that would not last long, as Bryn Mawr continued to pound the Falcons in the third frame as well. The Owls ran out to a 12-1 lead in that frame to put things virtually out of reach before coasting to a 25-12 win in the set.

With the sweep, the Owls move to 8-6 on the season and have some positive momentum headed into their first Centennial Conference match of the year. Bryn Mawr will travel to conference foe McDaniel on Saturday afternoon for the Green Terror Tri-Match. The Owls will take on the hosts at 12:00 PM for their first conference contest of 2014 in a rematch of a five-set marathon from last year. In that match, Bryn Mawr came back from being down twice in the match to force a deciding fifth set, and actually held a 12-10 lead in that frame before falling 18-16 to lose the match. This year, the Owls look for some revenge against the Green Terror before taking on Penn State Mont Alto in the second match of the day.
