Owls Dominate in Five Goal Win Over Cedar Crest

Box Score

Bryn Mawr, Pa. – After needing a golden goal to finish off their last game in overtime on Saturday, the Bryn Mawr soccer squad took a much less dramatic approach to victory earlier Monday afternoon. The Owls netted five goals in their match against Cedar Crest en route to a 5-0 shutout. Marcela Dorfsman-Hopkins and Fiona Steele both scored twice for the Yellow and Black as the team scored the most goals in a game since September of 2011.

Bryn Mawr (3-3, 0-1 Centennial) had the bit between their teeth from the beginning of the contest. The Owls lit off two shots within the first minute of play and earned three corners within the first ten. It was off of the third corner kick that the hosts would net their first goal. Nina Bertolami took the in-swinging corner kick on the right side and curled a perfectly placed ball just in front of the near post. Junior forward Marcela Dorfsman-Hopkins made a great run to that spot and deftly flicked the ball in between the post and Falcons goalkeeper Kari Vanderslice to give Bryn Mawr a 1-0 lead early on.

The Owls would have had three or four more great opportunities throughout the half, but they were called offsides several times on promising attacks. Bryn Mawr finally broke through for their first insurance goal with just over ten minutes left to play in the half. Fiona Steele managed to collect a ball behind the Cedar Crest defensive line and get in alone on Vanderslice. The freshman midfielder chipped a shot over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms and into the left side of the net to put the Owls ahead 2-0 before the half ended.

Cedar Crest (2-4-1) managed to hang on and compete for a good portion of the second half, but Bryn Mawr simply overwhelmed the visitors in the final third as the half wore on. The Owls got their third goal just under fifteen minutes from the final whistle, as Dorfsman-Hopkins picked up her second of the afternoon. Making a great run down the left side after coming up with a loose ball, Dorfsman-Hopkins sent a long shot from outside of the penalty box over the keeper's head and into the far right side of the net to make it a 3-0 game. Not to be outdone, Steele netted her brace with just a couple of minutes left to play. Alice Bell whipped in a corner kick from the left side, and the ball found its way to Steele in the center of the box. She let off a low shot that Vanderslice managed to parry away, but only directly back to Steele, who calmly slotted the ball into the net to make it 4-0. Bell then capped things off with her team-leading third goal of the season just 1:16 later, finishing at the near post after a Dorfsman-Hopkins cross from the right corner.

With the win, the Owls move back to .500 with a 3-3 record on the year. They'll get a couple of days off before heading back out on the road on Thursday afternoon. Bryn Mawr will take on Moravian at 4:00 PM in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Greyhounds are currently 3-2 on the season, having just defeated Centenary College on Saturday by a score of 5-1.
