Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls opened their conference season earlier this afternoon with a matchup against Muhlenberg. Bryn Mawr played a solid effort on both sides of the ball, but ultimately could not push anything across against a tough Mules defense. The Owls held Muhlenberg to one goal for a majority of the game until a late insurance goal made the final score 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Bryn Mawr (1-3, 0-1 Centennial) played the Mules straight up the entire way, even getting in some early attacks against the undefeated Muhlenberg squad. In the 10th minute, the Owls registered the first shot of the game off the foot of Alice Bell, but the Mules (5-0, 1-0 Centennial) were able to block it out of harm's way. Just ten minutes later, Muhlenberg got on the scoreboard with a fluke goal thanks to some strong pressure on the part of their forwards. After the ball got cleared out of the Muhlenberg end by their defense, an Owls defender was forced to play a long back-pass to goal keeper Aviva Kosansky. The junior netminder had to turn the ball across the field of play to her left and try to pass the ball upfield. However, Muhlenberg's Carly DeNigris cut off the pass and entered the penalty box on the right side. She shot back across the net, into the far netting to make it a 1-0 game in favor of the visitors.
Bryn Mawr had to hold on the rest of the way in the first half, as the Mules put up eight shots and six corner kicks in the frame. However, Kosansky came up big to keep things close with several one-handed, diving saves in the half. Allegra Levy had a chance to get a shot on goal later in the half on a strong offensive possession by the Yellow and Black, but her shot ripped just wide of the frame to keep Muhlenberg ahead. The Owls continued to try and tie the game back up as the second half got going, with Veronica Roux forcing Mules goalkeeper Tori Gonzalez into a save just seven minutes into the half. Later, Levy got off another shot that had Gonzalez rushing to smother the ball. With time winding down, the Owls got perhaps their best chance at an equalizer when the team earned a corner kick with 9:28 to play. Nina Bertolami sent a curling in-swinging ball into the mix in the goal box, but Gonzalez reached above several Bryn Mawr heads to pluck the ball out of the air and maintain her shutout. The Mules got a late insurance goal in the 87th minute when Phoebe Shields sent a cross from high up the field on the right side. The ball sailed over the Bryn Mawr back line to the waiting head of Jacelin Muschlitz, who headed it into the left side of the net and give the visitors a 2-0 cushion. The Owls Fiona Steele was unable to sneak a ball past Gonzalez on the last recorded play of the game, and Muhlenberg held on to take home the victory.
The Owls will get a single day off before getting right back into action on Saturday. Bryn Mawr will travel down the road to Langhorne for Cairn's home opening game. The Highlanders opened their season with a tremendous 10-0 thumping of Valley Forge Christian College before losing earlier this afternoon to DeSales University by a 1-0 scoreline. Saturday's contest is slated to kick off a 1:00 PM on Cairn's campus.
