Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball squad closed out their 2014 campaign in fantastic fashion earlier Thursday evening. The Owls celebrated Senior Day with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Goucher College, and absolutely dominated the match while doing it. Rachel Ofili led all scorers with 21 kills on the evening en route to setting a new single-season record in the category. Seniors Danielle Preziuso, Avary Taylor and Ellen Chiu all had standout performances as well in their final collegiate match in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.

The Owls (11-15, 1-9 Cent.) and Gophers (9-22, 1-6 Landmark) played back-and-forth for the first seventeen points of the match, with Bryn Mawr holding a slight 9-8 lead after that period. However, it was all downhill for the visitors from there, as the Owls used a solid run to build a big lead and never look back. After a pair of attack errors, Ofili nailed down one of her trademark kills, to make it a 12-8 lead. Goucher tried to stay in touch with the Owls, and managed to stay within three to five points up until they trailed 21-18. An attack error by the Gophers put Bryn Mawr back on serve, and the Owls used another three-point run to close out the set. Ofili slammed home another kill to make it 23-18, and then an attack error and bad set by the visitors handed Bryn Mawr a 25-18 set one victory.

After that first set, it was smooth sailing for the Owls as they had all the momentum in the match. The Owls opened the set by winning the first two points, with senior Taylor claiming one of those with a big hit down the middle. From there, Ofili took over the middle part of the set, notching five of the Owls first nine points of the set. After Goucher cut their deficit to 5-8, Ofili answered with an unstoppable spike down the center for her 327th kill of the season, a new record at Bryn Mawr. Danielle Preziuso was right there with one of her 35 assists on the night, a solid performance to close out her fine career. With the bench and crowd now in a frenzy, the Owls simply could not be stopped. The Owls opened up an 18-11 lead on the visitors, and from there closed out the second set with a 7-2 run. Ofili started that with another kill, and then three straight errors made it 22-11. Sarah Gates added a kill in that frame, and then two more attack errors from the Gophers closed out the set at 25-13 in favor of Bryn Mawr.

The Gophers played much tougher in the third frame, and manage to stay within three points midway through the frame. Another kill from Ofili shut down any hope of a rally by the visitors, and then senior Ellen Chiu put up a strong display of her own. Playing on an injury that limited her movement, Chiu was still able to spin in her next serve for an ace. Then, over the next several points, the senior outside hitter made several diving digs to keep the ball alive and allow the Owls to later win the point. Goucher tried to stem the tide, getting back to 15-21, but Bryn Mawr closed out the match on one last four-point run. Gates tallied another kill in that frame, and then after a bad set, Megan Kilmer lashed a kill of her own and Lauren Shue closed out the match in perfect style with a service ace down the right side.

The Owls finish out their 2014 campaign with an 11-15 record, just one win shy of last season.
