Five Hockey Players Honored on Senior Day, Almost Supply Upset

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr college field hockey program honored their five seniors –Isidora Armentrout, Caroline Herman, Kara Jane O'Donnell, Sara Jane Rodgers and Chloe Weeks- before the start of their game against Ursinus.

Bryn Mawr got on the board first at 14:15 when sophomore Madison Beckmann scored her conference-leading 16th goal of the season. The play started as Beckmann was heading to the net and drew a penalty corner. As the corner started to unfold, Beckmann landed on her mark, right next to the near post, and with a pass from freshman Kayla Bixler, Beckmann redirected the shot past Danielle DeSpirito.

The Owls' goal was the first time that Bryn Mawr has been able to find the back of the net against Ursinus since the Bears dropped from Division I status back in 2003. That snaps a 644-minute scoreless streak against UC.

Ursinus, playing catch-up, tried their best to find the back of the cage but were continuously turned-away by the Owls defense. The Bears finally got on the board at 27:46, when Catherine Bitterly was able to score on a scramble in front of the net.

Less than three minutes later, Ursinus netted the go-ahead goal when Danielle Stong took a pass from Jenna Stover to beat a diving Alex Weinfeld. The Bears held on to take their 2-1 lead into the half.

In the second-half, both teams kept their opponents honest, but strong play in the midfield kept either offense from putting together strong scoring chances. Despite a late surge by the Owls, Ursinus was able to slow down their flight and hold them scoreless the remainder of the way, picking-up the 2-1 win.

In addition to Weinfeld, the Bryn Mawr defense comprised of Bixler, sophomore Nina Shmorhun and freshman Ashlee Williams held strong along the backline. The Owls took six shots, led by Beckmann with two, and earned six penalty corners. Weinfeld posted 12 saves against an Ursinus team that reached the national semi-finals a year ago.

The Owls held the Bears to single-digit goals for the first time in 2005 when Ursinus won 5-0.

The owls are back to action when they host Gettysburg on Saturday, October 13, at 3:00 pm on Applebee Field.
