BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College volleyball team closed out the 2011 season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) win over visiting Dickinson College in Centennial Conference play Thursday night.
In the opening set, Bryn Mawr held a 20-14 lead late but Dickinson clawed their way back but a service error by Liz Norris gave Bryn Mawr the win.
The second frame started well for the Owls as they built an 11-3 lead forcing the Red Devils to call a timeout. After taking the short break from action, Dickinson pulled with four, 9-13, to Owls; forcing 10th year head coach Joan Braid to call a time out.
After the Owls' timeout and six straight serves from senior Katie Merrill, the Owls were sitting high on their perch with a 22-13 advantage. Dickinson battled back to cut their deficit to 21-24, but once again, a service error for Dickinson gave Bryn Mawr the set.
In the third and final set, it was the Owls playing catch-up as Dickinson rolled to a 12-9 start. A pair of service aces from senior Mikecia Witherspoon and a kill from Merrill, Bryn Mawr tied the game at 12.
Dickinson regained the lead but once again, the Owls tied the game and took the lead making Dickinson call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Bryn Mawr pushed their lead to 24-19, before Dickinson's Sam Iazzetta pulled the Red Devils close, 22-24. On the final point of the game, Witherspoon ended the 2011 season with a kill, one of her 11 on the night.
Leading the Owls with a game-best 13 kills was Merrill. She also added 12 digs and four block solos. In addition to Witherspoon's 11 kills, she tallied two aces and a pair of block assists.
Junior Hannah Rosebrock chipped in six kills while freshman Danielle Preziuso handed out 22 assists.
The Owls finish the year 10-16 overall and 4-6 in the Centennial Conference. Tonight saw the record-breaking careers of Merrill and Witherspoon come to an end. Also playing in her final collegiate game was Emily Takeuchi-Miller.
