BRYN MAWR, Pa.– The Bryn Mawr college volleyball team honored their three seniors Saturday afternoon at home against visiting Johns Hopkins. Katie Merrill, Emily Takeuchi-Miller and Mikecia Witherspoon were presented with flowers from the team in a pre-match ceremony.
On the afternoon, Merrill led all hitters with a game-best 14 kills but it wasn't enough as the Blue Jays defeated the Owls 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-16) to stay undefeated in league play.
Down 21-12 in the opening set, Bryn Mawr started to make a comeback behind the service of sophomore Miranda McDevitt and freshman Danielle Preziuso as the Owls cut their deficit to five, 18-23. Back-to-back kills from Megan Schwarz and Katie Schwarz closed the book on the owls as Hopkins escaped with the 25-18 win.
In the second, Hopkins rolled to the 25-12 win as Melissa Cole and Megan Donahoe had three kills each.
In the third and final set, Bryn Mawr jumped out to an early 7-4 lead but it was short lived as Hopkins battle back and too a 16-9 lead moments later. The Blue Jays outscored the Owls 9-7 down the home stretch to move to 19-7 overall and 8-0 in league play.
In addition to her 14 kills, Merrill ended the day with 8 digs and four total blocks. Witherspoon added nine kills and seven digs as Preziuso handed out 17 assists.
Witherspoon recorded the Owls only service ace of the match while freshman Ellen Chiu, sophomore Jackie Handy and junior Hannah Rosebrock all tallied block assists.
The Owls are back to action on Tuesday, Oct. 25, when they host rival Swarthmore in the class of 1958 Gymnasium at 7:00 pm.
