Owls Close Out Cross Country Season At NCAA Mideast Regional

Center Valley, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr cross country team wrapped up their 2016 campaign earlier Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Mideast Regional, hosted by DeSales. The Owls earned a 28th place finish overall in the packed meet, with 51 teams in attendance.

Junior Kate Edwards led the Owls on the day with a 57th place finish. Edwards put together a strong race the whole way through, finishing in a time of 23:28. That was a 6:17 pace, and was also the 26th-fastest time of all the Centennial Conference runners in attendance. It was also a big improvement on her 90th place finish in this event in last year's campaign.

Sophomore Chelsea Thangavelu and freshman Campbell Powell ran as a very solid duo once again on the day. Thangavelu posted a time of 25:25 in the event to take 176th, way better than her 244th place finish last year, while Powell followed close behind in 179th with a time of 25:27.

Haley Varnum was the next finisher for Bryn Mawr, posting a 216th place effort in a time of 26:02. Freshman Emily Williams put a great pin on her debut season at Bryn Mawr by rounding out the top five for the Owls in 227th place with a time of 26:19. Williams was also the lone Owl to set a new personal record on the day. Sydney Maves and Sophie Webb completed the Bryn Mawr seven, coming in 234 and 250 with times of 26:26 and 27:00, respectively.

"It's been such a fantastic season watching this team develop," stated Bryn Mawr head coach Jason Hewitt. "I'm sad to see it come to a close. Even still, it was a great day to be out on the course watching this race, watching our veterans like Kate and Syd hold down the race and seeing the potential in our younger runners start to come to fruition. Given time this young squad up front is really going to fly!"

With the finish, Bryn Mawr wraps up yet another very successful cross country campaign this season. However, the work is not done for many of these Owls, as most of them will continue their efforts into the winter as members of the indoor track & field team.

The team was supported today by the Edwards, the Jones, and Alex Beda from the class of 2016. Many thanks to all who where able to attend and those who supported us from afar. - Coach Hewitt
