Owls Volleyball Fights Hard Against Gwynedd Mercy

Jess DeJoie celebrates a kill against Gwynedd Mercy

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball squad welcomed Gwynedd Mercy to campus earlier Saturday afternoon for a non-conference tilt on Homecoming. The Owls struggled to get much going in the first two sets, but gave the Griffins all they could handle in the third set. However, Gwynedd Mercy ultimately held on, taking a 3-0 win on the day. Bryn Mawr posted their second-most kills of the season in today's contest, led by nine kills from Nicole Wood.

The Griffins got out to an incredibly hot start in the opening set, vaulting to a 17-2 lead before the Owls really knew what hit them. Wood's first kill of the night put a stop to that run, but Gwynedd Mercy extended their lead to 22-3 after several more kills. Wood added another kill and Casandra Paiz put in a perfect serve for an ace late in the set, but Bryn Mawr could not hang with the Griffins' 12/1 kill-to-error ratio in the set, and the visitors ultimately claimed the first frame 25-7.

The second set was a similar story, this time with Gwynedd Mercy jumping out to an 11-3 lead. A kill from Sydney Munnerlyn stopped that run, and Jess DeJoie added a kill of her own just a couple points later. Several errors and a kill from Wood later and the Owls had climbed within 18-10. However, Gwynedd Mercy won the final seven points of the set to win 25-10.

The third frame was where the Owls really made some noise. Gwynedd Mercy once again took an early 15-5 advantage, but this time, the Owls stayed in the set. Jess DeJoie tallied a kill to help spark a turnaround for the Owls, and several points later, the hosts won seven of the next eight points. Munnerlyn and Sydney Collins posted back-to-back kills at the beginning of that run, followed by two kills from Wood and an ace from Munnerlyn later in the rally. That pulled Bryn Mawr within 18-15 and forced a Gwynedd Mercy timeout. Later, three straight points, including another kill and an ace from Wood, helped draw Bryn Mawr even closer at 20-18. However, Gwynedd Mercy managed to stop the bleeding, winning five of the next six points to close out the frame 25-19 and take the win on the day.

Bryn Mawr will be right back in action in the middle of next week with another non-conference tilt on hand. The Owls will welcome Penn State Abington to campus on Wednesday, with gametime set for 7:00 PM in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.
