BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr field hockey team opened their 2019 campaign in style earlier Friday afternoon against Cedar Crest College. Coming off of an historic 2018 campaign, the Owls' best season in over two decades, Bryn Mawr made sure to keep the positive momentum going in their season-opener by taking a 4-0 victory from the Falcons. Senior midfielder Mary Cugini kicked off her capstone season with a two-goal performance, scoring the opening and closing goals of the game for the Owls in their comfortable victory.
The contest got off to a fairly quiet start, with both sides finding few chances in the first 20 minutes of play. However, Bryn Mawr steadily built momentum in the contest, including earning several penalty corners. That pressure finally paid off, as Cugini tallied the opener with less than three minutes to go in the first half. The senior pounced on a deflected ball right in the middle of the circle and fired a shot past Cedar Crest goalkeeper Cassandra Reijgers and into the back of the cage to give the Owls a 1-0 lead headed into halftime.
Bryn Mawr did a fantastic job coming out of the halftime break and keeping their foot on the gas, as the Owls would double their lead just eight minutes into the third quarter. Cugini once again played a key role in the goal, as she collected a Falcons turnover and sliced through the middle of the visitors' defense. Then, she sent a pass to her right to first-year Olivia Supron. Finding a bit of space, Supron let a shot loose towards the cage, and junior forward Kelly Bergman did a fantastic job of getting a stick on the ball and redirecting it past a sprawling Reijgers and into the back of the cage.
The Owls put in two more goals in the final quarter, starting with a strike from Samantha Shaw right off the bat. The junior was right in the middle of the circle and collected a pass, whereupon she immediately let loose a low, hard shot. Reijgers did a great job to save the effort, but the rebound caromed straight back to Shaw. With a slightly different angle now, Shaw was able to immediately put the ball back where it came, this time past Reijgers and into the cage to make it 3-0. Cugini put a bow on her excellent performance with the final goal, scoring with less than two minutes to play. Once again she showcased some deft stickhandling, cutting through Cedar Crest's defenses and into the top right of the circle. From there, she fired back across the face of goal, sneaking the shot just past the pad of Reijgers and just inside the left post to make it a 4-0 decision in favor of the Owls.
Today's win is Bryn Mawr's third straight victory against Cedar Crest in series history. The Owls will now get the weekend off before being back in action on Monday with another home contest. Bryn Mawr will welcome Hood to campus on Monday, September 2nd, with the Labor Day showdown slated to start at 1:00 PM on Applebee Field.
