NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Bryn Mawr swim team traveled up to the New England region this weekend to take part in the annual Seven Sisters Championship. This year, Smith College is the host for the event, and the Owls got day one off to a flying start thanks to numerous strong performances from the team.
Session one kicked off on Saturday morning with the 200 freestyle relay, where Bryn Mawr's "A" squad of Varuna Jasodanand, Lauren Birmingham, Maya Schneider, and Lillian Oyen-Ustad combined to take a sixth-place finish in a time of 1:47.14.
In the 500 freestyle, Schneider led the way for the Owls. Competing in her first 500 free of the season, Schneider took 15th place with a finish of 5:46.42. Also competing in the 500 free was Faith Meacham, who posted a season-best time of 6:01.41 for a 21st place finish.
Lucy Bruemmer took part in her first 200 IM of the year, and she led the Owls in that event with a 13th place finish in a time of 2:28.48.
Next up was the 50 free, where Lillian Oyen-Ustad posted Bryn Mawr's best finish of the day. The senior took seventh place in the sprint event, coming home in a time of 26.08. Elizabeth Kunkel also had a notable race in the 50 free, as she posted a season-best time of 32.58 in the event for the Owls.
The 400 medley relay marked the end of the first session of the day, with Bryn Mawr's top squad taking eighth place in the event. Following their strong morning session, Bryn Mawr stood in third place overall with 114 points.
The afternoon session began with the 200 medley relay, where the Owls' squad of Jasodanand, Hannah Soisson, Schneider, and Oyen-Ustad once again claimed sixth place. Schneider went on to take ninth place in the very next event, the 400 IM.
Oyen-Ustad was back in action in the 200 freestyle, with her 16th place finish helping earn the Owls another point on the day.
Soisson completed her strong day with a solid 10th place finish in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in a time of 1:15.92 to gain the Owls another seven points.
In the final individual event of the day, the 100 backstroke, Bryn Mawr got several very strong performances. Jasodanand claimed 12th place with a time of 1:06.21 to get Bryn Mawr five more points. Kunkel posted another season best time in the event, along with a season best from Ruth Mullin.
The Owls will be right back in action on Sunday for the final day of the Seven Sisters swim championship. Sunday's session starts at 12:15 PM.
